PARASTOMAL HERNIA
An abdominal stoma is a surgically created opening in the abdominal wall that allows for the diversion of urine or feces. This procedure is typically performed when normal elimination of waste through the natural route (anus or urethra) is not possible due to some disease like cancer, an inflammatory disorder, or a surgical procedure needing a cover that requires a temporary or permanent rerouting of stools or feces. Stomas are named after the organ that is brought out namely colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy.
Para-stomal hernias develop between the abdominal wall and the organ that is brought out. Permanent stomas are more likely to develop hernias over a period. These hernias can be tough to manage and there is a high incidence of lifetime recurrence even if repaired.
