INCISIONAL HERNIA
Incisional hernias are a type of ventral hernia that occurs at the site of a previous abdominal surgery incision. When a person undergoes abdominal surgery, the surgeon makes an incision through the abdominal wall to access and operate on internal organs.
The circumstances surrounding the primary abdominal surgery can create conditions that make the abdominal wall more susceptible to weakness and hernia development.
Especially when surgery is done for an infective condition like bowel perforation, acute cholecystitis, acute appendicitis, any other conditions with intra-abdominal sepsis, immunocompromised person, or an elderly person with sarcopenia. There can be times when in a lifesaving emergency after a laparotomy the abdomen cannot be closed due to excessive intra-abdominal pressure and must be managed as an ‘open abdomen’, this is a rare situation where eventually an incisional hernia develops. Other patient factors can lead to incisional hernias like, obesity, surgery for abdominal trauma, or abdominal wall tumors where there can be a deficiency of the abdominal wall tissues.
