ABDOMINAL WALL REPAIR (AWR)

The abdominal wall is a complex layered structure of muscles, fascia, and connective tissues that protect the organs in the abdominal cavity. Hernias in the abdominal wall are not just holes, they also lead to core muscle dysfunction which leads to difficulty in activities involving straining like micturition, coughing, lifting weights and other daily activities. A hernia surgery that aims to restore the normal anatomy of the abdominal muscles, restore the core functions, and prevent future recurrences will be called abdominal wall repair.

Abdominal wall repair involves restoration or strengthening of linea alba, restoration of linea semilunaris, closure of all hernial defects and scar weaknesses, restoring physiological tension of the muscles, and most importantly creating a sufficiently large space to lay a prosthetic mesh and preventing recurrence of the hernia. Techniques like the ACS, RS, PCS, and TAR are some of the methods of abdominal wall repair.
